During a recent episode of his weekly YouTube show, Univision President of News Daniel Coronell weighed in on the controversy surrounding the network’s interview of former President Donald Trump. Coronell’s remarks, unlike Univision CEO Wade Davis’ internal email or Jorge Ramos’ opinion column, were delivered while directly addressing a viewer of his weekly YouTube broadcast who was expressing dissatisfaction with the interview. This makes Coronell’s remarks all the more significant.

I’m old enough to remember when comedy, especially late-night comedy, used to be funny and mostly devoid of the screeching leftwing neopuritanism we endure today. John Leguizamo’s recent opinion segment on The Daily Show, with its attendant rant on the kerfuffle surrounding Televisa’s interview of former President Donald Trump, was an even more painful reminder of when comedy used to be funny. Here’s how the segment wound down, and just be grateful I didn’t clip the whole thing:

One constant throughout my conversations with those who work in local media (particularly local media serving Hispanic communities) is the contemptuous tone reserved for the “parachute media”: that is, members of the elite Acela Media (“media reporters” and such) who “parachute” into a subject matter they know nothing about, fart out their reports, and then return to D.C. or New York.

I sat down and watched TelevisaUnivision’s interview with former President Donald J. Trump, expecting fiery exchanges and contentiousness and I am in complete shock for there were no such things. Instead, viewers watched a calm, rational dialogue between Trump and Televisa N+ anchor Enrique Acevedo. And I can't quite figure out why.
