In trying to decide whether a claim of fact qualifies as either true or false, Americans consider the intentions of the information source, Boston College psychologists reported recently in Nature’s Scientific Reports. That confidence, they found, is based on what individuals think the source of information is trying to do – in this case either accurately informing or deceiving their audience.
