FDNY fire inspectors are close to settling a federal race discrimination class action lawsuit against the city for $29.2 million.

The decision by Manhattan Federal Court Judge Analisa Torres will help the 500 predominately non-white fire protection inspectors pursue their suit over low pay. More than 70% of the 500 fire protection inspectors are minorities, while workers with similar higher-paid jobs at the Buildings Department are approximately 50% white, says the suit.

As they do every year, FDNY Fire Inspectors will be on the five massive barges anchored in the East River where the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks will be set off, making sure that everything goes off without a hitch.
