Melaka ramps up efforts to reduce road accidents

MELAKA: Melaka will revive its now defunct Road Safety Council (MKJR) after the state recorded a sharp increase in road fatalities between February and March this year. State Public Works, Transport, Public Amenities and Infrastructure Committee chairman Datuk Roslan Ahmad told The Star that the function of MKJR was still vital to identify accident-prone areas and prevent deaths. “I have proposed to the Melaka Road Transport Department my plans to revive MKJR. “I have also put forward the proposal to relevant stakeholders in the state, ” he said in an interview yesterday. “Motorcyclists contributed to the highest casualty rates in the state and we have to encourage riders to think of their safety.”

Melaka plans to revive now-defunct state road safety council

MELAKA: The state government plans to revive the now-defunct Road Safety Council (MKJR) after the state recorded a 200% increase in road fatalities in a single month. Melaka police traffic chief Supt Hasan Basri Yahya had said on Saturday that there were 15 fatalities from road accidents in March compared to five in February. There was a corresponding increase in road accidents, with 907 reported in February and 1,370 in March. Melaka public works, transport, public amenities and infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Roslan Ahmad said that the MKJR could identify accident-prone areas and possibly prevent more deaths. "I have proposed to Melaka Road Transport Department on my plans to revive MKJR and I have put forward the proposal to relevant stakeholders in the state," he said in an interview on Saturday (May 1).

Melaka to introduce electric-powered buses for tourists next year

MELAKA: The Melaka government is expected to introduce its latest attraction, electric-powered buses for tourists, at the end of next month in a bid to boost the domestic tourism industry which has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. State Works, Transport, Public Amenities and Infrastructure Committee chairman Datuk Roslan Ahmad said this was a result of cooperation between state government subsidiary Panorama Sdn Bhd and a private company operating in Kuala Lumpur. “The electric-powered buses will begin their services from Melaka Sentral and pass through nine or 14 stations covering tourist areas, including the Melaka Zoo, Taming Sari Tower, United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Heritage (UNESCO) World Heritage Site around Banda Hilir, before heading for Klebang.
