The U.S. Army confirms that a Congressional inquiry has been opened after news of a Gold Star family’s grave site being given away was made public.

A Gold Star family says their mother was promised a cemetery plot next to their father, who was killed in the Vietnam War and buried at a JBLM cemetery. Now, another veteran has been laid to rest in the space.

Mary Dowling, the wife of helicopter pilot Bob Dowling, killed in the Vietnam War, had received annual assurances from the Army that her grave plot next to her husband’s was secure. On Veteran’s Day, she saw freshly turned earth and realized someone else had been buried in her plot.

None of the solutions the Army has proposed involve giving Mary her plot back, and she has stood firm that is the only solution she will accept.
