If the legislation passes, Washington would be just the second state in the U.S. to amend its blood alcohol content limit.

The number of deaths on the state’s roads last year was the highest in more than 30 years. There is bipartisan support for legislation to increase Washington’s road safety and lower the blood alcohol limit.

When it comes to traffic fatalities, Washington leads the nation in year-over-year increases.

While Washington state saw a 16 percent increase in road deaths between 2020 and 2021, Pierce County saw a 34 percent year-to-year jump, alerting officials of the dire need for road safety reform.

Friends and family are pushing for safer streets after a 13-year-old was killed by a driver while riding his bike in a crosswalk in late July. 

Family, friends and the community held a vigil Saturday to remember and honor 13-year-old Michael Weilert at the Parkland crosswalk where he was hit and killed.

The parents of Michael Weilert, the 13-year-old boy killed on his bicycle in Parkland this week, are sharing their story in the hopes that no other parents ever deal with a similar tragedy.
