Major budget cuts that have limited the PSNI’s ability to patrol the roads for lawbreakers and slashed Stormont’s road safety funding to a fraction of what it was a decade ago have been blamed for contributing to the carnage on Northern Ireland’s roads this year.

Men are historically more successful in passing the driving test, but new figures show a change.

Concerns have been raised after it emerged that road deaths have more than doubled since last year – from 10 to 24.

Drivers were detected going more than 160mph on a road outside Saintfield, County Down.
