The last 12 US and Canadian missionaries kidnapped this October in Haiti have been released, ending an ordeal that brought global attention to the Caribbean nations growing gang problem.

Three more of the 17 American and Canadian missionaries kidnapped in Haiti in October have been freed, their church group Christian Aid Ministries said on Monday. Twelve people remain in captivity.

The 400 Mawozo gang leader has formally issued his demands to the head of Christian Aid Ministries but has yet to issue a deadline for the payment.

The gang that kidnapped 17 people with a U.S Christian aid group in Haiti on Saturday is demanding a ransom of $1 million for each person, the countrys justice minister, Liszt Quitel, said on Tuesday.

A group of missionaries with an Ohio-based Amish organization are likely being held for ransom, according to Haiti experts. They are believed to be held by a gang named 400 Mawozo.
