Tulsa Public Schools Could Return To In-Person Learning In Late February
Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist says she believes that students return to in-person learning before the end of February. She said she is not making a recommendation. Based on our current COVID trajectory, and of course subject to board approval, I believe we can bring our students back to in-person learning before the end of February, said Gist on Monday.
Dr. Gist cited data that shows a downward trend for infection rates within the district saying that it the longest sustained decline since the pandemic began. Gist also announced a plan for expanded Summer learning programs for students. Dr. Gist did not provide a specific date for return, with that decision being in the hands of the school board which will meet Monday night.

After nearly a year of pandemic disruption, Tulsa Public Schools students at all grade levels could return to in-person instruction by the end of February according to a proposal from the district s superintendent. Over the last month, we have seen our longest sustained decline in Tulsa-area COVID-19 rates since the pandemic began. Based on our current COVID trajectory and subject to board approval, I believe that we can bring all of our students back to in-person learning before the end of February, Dr. Deborah Gist wrote in a Monday morning letter to TPS parents and families.
At a Monday morning press conference, Gist acknowledged a significant, months-long public pressure campaign, championed by Gov. Kevin Stitt, to get the district to offer in-person learning as an option despite high levels of infection locally, but said that played no role in her proposal.
Educators Ask For COVID-19 Vaccine Priority In Joint Statement
Tulsa Public schools and the educator’s association sent out a news release asking the state to prioritize Tulsa public teachers for the COVID-19 vaccine.
The statement asks for the prioritization for educators and team members to get the vaccine.
Right now, only teachers and staff over 65 are eligible for the vaccine.
“We’re not seeking to prioritize our team members who have other health risks above other Oklahomans, but rather to allow us that when vaccinations are available that we are able to start to vaccinate those members of our team who have health risks, and at the same time are serving every single day on the front lines, said Dr. Deborah Gist, Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent.
