trump administration failed. and tonight, his message to americans and now a divided congress. this is what we are watching this hour. we want to welcome the viewers here in the united states and around the world. at this hour, i m kate bolduan. let s start with the urgent search for survivors at that huge earthquake in turkey and syria. the death toll is over 5,000 people killed and that number is to rise. the pictures of the reality of the aftermath of the quake are devastating. thousands of buildings collapsed, and the weather is making already challenging rescue efforts just that much harder, and add to that, the dissional reality that some of the places were in crisis. take northwest syria for example with more than 4 million people were already relying on humanitarian assistance there. there have been moments of light in the heartbreaking images. this video is showing a small girl being rescued after crawling out of a collapsed building. you can just imagine. we go to
trump administration without them knowing it, and it was only later that the u.s. went back to look at the data and the trajectories of these balloons that they came to believe they were surveillance balloon, and the gap is what the u.s. is trying the close now especially now that it has the balloon in hand or parts of it as we see with the images, and working to recover the rest of it, kate. oren, thank you so much. the fbi lab as we have been seeing the images and what is being recovered, the fbi is identifying the parts of the downed balloon. carlos, what is the latest from there? kate, so we are about 21 miles off of the main debris zone off of the coast of south carolina, and it is quite clear that the fbi and the navy are starting to make preparations to bring the debris here.
the statement is less than clear. by using the word, the most credible lead to where the debris may be located. they know that we will interpret that as being a subsequent drift to where the plane would have gone down 20 odd days ago. we know one of the biggest issues they re going to have in this is reverse engineering. so david is spot-on. the fact that they have shifted the debris zone means that not only do they believe the debris zone is 600, 700 miles to the northeast, then the impact area is even further off than that, because of the way things have moved. mary, at the end of this day, the new search area, 123,000 square miles, is still a massive area to be looking at. it s still a massive amount of area and to me it seems like they re starting over.
