There’s a huge variety of possible sites, and finding a pathway through the tortuous current controls to establish ‘standardised designs’ for those sites leads to the conclusion that a universal pattern book requires an almost infinite number of possible designs. Which defeats the purpose.

Building products using asbestos as a strengthening agent started in the 1920s. By the 50s it had become the basis of many sheet materials and insulation in the building industry, witnessed by the three prominent advertisements for asbestos (above + below), taken from a 1954 commemorative edition of Architecture Australia, produced for the annual conference. 70 years ago it’s as a wonder product.

A relative humidity of 50% is optimal; below 40% causes extremely dry air, leading to static electricity from friction (when you touch a metal cabinet in an AC building). Over 70% increases the feeling of heat, adding 5 degrees or more to the temperature sensed. There’s a sweet spot, or rather a sweet range, described by analysing the combination of air temperature and humidity in a Psychrometric Chart.

The hero shot is the bane of good architecture. Form follows photos. Its a manifestation of container over contained: the exterior, not the internal. It should be space, light, use, quality. Those are the things that make architecture. I rail against the hero shot’s ubiquity, and architects’ obsession with it.
