collection of sensors. reporter: laura was one of the students on the design team and even while blindfold her feet can still see. so there is something like in this area. reporter: when the shoe gets near an obstacle, the nearest sensor begins to vibrate. there s something directly in front of me, so i m going to go reporter: the closer the obstacle, the faster the vibration. how does it work? well, it s similar to backup sensors in a car. [ beeping noise ] they send out a small sound wave. when the sound bounces back, the car knows how far away the obstacle is. when i am using the shoes i can see behind me. and around me. reporter: the main design objective of the shoes was to eliminate the need for a cane. so user has both hands free and they can feel what s in front of them. yes. that would be nice. i usually take my left hand and do that. it would be nice to be able to have both hands.
