Dingli trees and ERA I was extremely perplexed to read Victor Axiak’s reply, in his personal capacity, (April 17) to my article ‘Dingli trees will down ERA’ (April 10), of which authority the professor is the official chairman. Very strange indeed. It was surprising to read that he is “equally pained by the loss of a single tree, wherever it may occur, especially in this country of ours where the sprawling concrete is spreading like cancer”. He must have endured a lot of pain consider...

Malta’s COVID vaccination programme Further to my letter published on March 12, I feel compelled to write again about the complete lack of transparency in Malta’s COVID vaccination programme. The order in which people are being vaccinated does not seem to follow any logic. Nobody begrudges frontline workers being prioritised but when we read about construction companies and even court registrars demanding priority one cannot help but think powerful lobby groups are having a disproportionate...

Updated 11am with Axiaks reply Nine NGOs have written to Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia, asking him to sack Victor Axiak from his role as chair of the Environmental Resources Authority. Axiak, a biology professor who was appointed chair of the environmental regulator in 2016, has come under fire from environmental groups for what they described as a “spate of abysmal decisions.” In an open letter to the minister (see below), the NGOs listed a series of ERA decisions that they said ra...

A group of environmental and civic action NGOs have written to environment minister Aaron Farrugia, calling for the removal of Prof. Victor Axiak from his post as head of the Environment and Resources Authority. The NGOs accused Axiak of “repeatedly and unashamedly during the last few years, acted and voted against the environmental wellbeing of this country.” “Instead of acting as a guardian for our limited environmental resources, and duly guiding ERA to behave as an authority ...

Sixteen illustrators have come together to celebrate the “quirkiness, wisdom and love” of the elderly through striking and often heart-warming artworks in an online exhibition. The exhibition is called Kliem ix-xiħ żomm fih – which advises people to trust those words. Organised by the Malta Community of Illustrators (MCOI), each illustrator has contributed a unique artwork, paired with touching stories about their grandparents, elderly parents or neighbours whose presence has been miss...

ERA does U-turn on Dingli tourism complex Favourable verdict for tourism complex on site of former fireworks factory despite earlier objection to having tourist facilities on Natura 2000 site 11 April 2021, 8:41am by James Debono The Environment and Resources Authority has dropped its original objection to a proposed tourist complex on the site of a former explosives factory in Dingli. Although considerably downscaled, the project still does not address the ERA’s original concern about commi...

The Environment and Resources Authority board meeting minutes (October 9, 2020) regarding the destruction of trees at Dingli reveal that the ERA vice chairman “suggested that such permission ought to be assembled in a holistic process”. Chair Victor Axiak agreed with such a suggestion but added “that one should only be limited to ERA’s responsibility so far”. And the permit was granted. Imagine a marine biologist saying that the reclamation of part of the sea does not concern the mari...
