Activists in Dingli end three-week protest against 'road to nowhere'

Activists camping in Dingli to block works on a controversial “road to nowhere” cutting through fields have agreed to stand down after the authorities reduced the road’s width by a fifth. The scaling down of the project connecting Sienja and Muzew alleys with Don Bosco street will also ensure no more carob trees are destroyed and a Medieval chapel in the area is further protected, although its environmental context will be ruined. Two centuries-old trees have already been destroyed as par...

Fresh page for environment - Robert Cutajar

Over the past few days we have witnessed what Infrastructure Malta has been up to in Dingli. Infrastructure Malta, or more likely ‘Destruction Malta’, continued butchering trees, some of which were 300 years old, taking away farmer’s fields and putting a medieval chapel in danger.  This is only the latest episode, because lately we have seen ‘Destruction Malta’ being responsible for similar atrocities in Żebbuġ, San Ġwann and close to the Victoria Lines in Mosta. At this stage, on...

Ombudsman looking into illegal Comino works - PN MP Robert Cutajar

The Ombudsman is looking into works on a dust road leading to Comino’s Blue Lagoon that were last month stopped by the Environment Resources Authority due to damage on the surroundings, the PN said on Monday. The Gozo Ministry project was first flagged by independent candidate Arnold Cassola, who described it as “the destruction of Blue Lagoon with infrastructural works to build hamburger and granita kiosks”. In March ERA said it had given the contractor a verbal Stop Order to halt wo...

A planning application seeks to turn a disused fireworks factory outside the development zone in Dingli into tourist accommodation. The proposed development lays plans for an expansive complex on a site of about 6,275sqm. The complex is split into 14 bungalows, each with its own swimming pool, as well as a management block and ancillary facilities, including a cesspit. The former Pulvich fireworks factory is located in an area known as il-Qaws and is a designated Natura 2000 site in bet-ween L-...

Just pave Malta into one large tunnel-road to Sicily, already

What are we skinning? The unbearable lightness of Ian Borg. Why are we skinning it? Because the Transport Minister is once again in the public spotlight - despite the incredibly fierce competition he’s been facing over the past week or so - for an approach to public building and spending that is aggressive and cavalier in equal measure. But what does ‘unbearable lightness’ even mean? Why do you insist on using fancy words when talking about distinctly mediocre people? The Unbearable Light...

Dingli impasse: why new roads should always require permits

Infrastructure Malta did not require a permit to carry out roadworks in the vicinity of the scheduled Santa Duminka medieval chapel, which passed right through 300-year old carob trees. This is because a legal notice dating back to 2008, exempts state bodies from seeking permits for the development of schemed roads, or rather... lines drawn on maps; in this case dating back to 1965 which were carried over in the local plan published in 2006. But while in some cases these works do follow the lin...

The steamroller strategy of Malta's roads agency

Infrastructure Malta has built more than roads but also a reputation for having a dubious relationship with the rules. Jessica Arena looks at the evidence. When Infrastructure Malta swooped down recently on a quiet residential road in Żebbuġ and started to widen it, the action raised the ire of residents, as well as environmentalists, who held that  the works breached all road policies.  This reaction was hardly a first for the government agency that oversees construction projects.  Since...
