Does Mr Pakati (BCM mayor Xola Pakati) actually reside in or has he ever driven right through the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of which he is so proud? After almost three decades of democracy and freedom, it is no longer valid to say all that is wrong in SA is because of white people, colonialism, and apartheid. What has become explicit is that our black leaders and elders have insulted us and failed to make circumstances good for us. The elders of today are glued to their seats, enjoying their control over a younger generation that is destitute.

I noticed a tender contract 3224 (advertised DD Jun 14) for “appointment of service provider to provide services to design, construct, supply, deliver and install bronze life-size statues of Steve Tshwete and Victoria Mxenge in Duncan Village”. I — and, I’m sure, many other concerned citizens — will question this absurd tender in the financially constrained times we are experiencing.

There is a deliberate misconception in SA whereby hatred and fear regarding foreigners are equated to challenges of socioeconomic conditions. The beneficiaries of this pandemonium are also the sources of the frustration and real cause of poor skilling among the poor. Also, this is the reason foreigners not only outcompete black and poor South Africans but outwork them even in those sectors that locals used to dominate.

The land question in SA is a historical and emotive issue, which touches the very existence of black people. The persisting legacy of the wars of dispossession and conquest in the 18th and 19th centuries culminating in the 1913 Land Act, which confined 87% of the population to 13% of the land still lives with us today.

The article “BCM vows to get tough on rowdy behaviour” on December 16 refers. It is music to my ears as I look to BCM to punitively apply its bylaws. On December 8, I strolled down to Eastern Beach with my foreigner friend to get him to enjoy our amenities. What we saw was an eyesore. The beach area including the rocky embankment was littered with broken bottles, plastic and other man-made debris.

The ANC government should consider working with opposition parties such as the DA. This can take some form of government of national unity. The DA, for instance, has a number of people who have the requisite skills and knowledge needed in running some key pillars of the state. The fusion will motivate every individual towards nation building and reconciliation, which in turn is important in turning the economy around.
