Belarus plans to launch the full cycle production of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine by the end of the year, Belarusian Health Minister Dmitry Pinevich told journalists on Wednesday before a meeting of the council for health cooperation of the CIS.

"COVID-19 cases are somewhat rising in Belarus, too. The virus has already hit its peak. Belarus will spend the next week trying to come to grips with the situation in each hospital, each infected person and will develop additional measures, if necessary, to treat COVID-19 patients,” the head of state said.

The minister noted that there are biological, medical, trade and political aspects of vaccines. Both inactivated and viral vector vaccines are used in Belarus. Belarusians can choose from among the Russian and Chinese vaccines, but those produced in Europe are not available in the country.

“We are already seeing an increase, if not a surge, in the number of people vaccinated against the coronavirus. The number of those who have received the first dose is 2.5 million. The number of fully-vaccinated people is increasing pretty fast, too,” Dmitry Pinevich said.
