Despite their health challenges and their alleged use in dogfights, many of the canines were friendly and affectionate with their rescuers.

An official with the Department of Defense has been charged with facilitating a dog fight alongside another man from Maryland, the Justice Department said in a news release on Monday.

The FBI arrested senior Department of Defense communications official Frederick Douglass Moorefield on charges of taking part in a dogfighting ring in the District of Columbia since at least 2002, an American newspaper reported on Tuesday.

"The dogs had scars and were in multiple stages of injuries (and that leads us to suspect) they were involved in dog fighting," Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson said.
