The Serpent is streaming now on Netflix, and is the streamer s latest foray into true crime. The show, which aired on the BBC in the U.K. in early 2021, tells the story of Charles Sobhraj (played by Tahar Rahim), who evaded the police for decades while embarking on a global crime spree. Though the Netflix show mostly focuses on the murders that Sobhraj committed, this is just the tip of the iceberg of the true story.

Born in what was then Saigon (and is now Hoi Chi Minh City) in Vietnam, Sobhraj criminal career began with petty crimes in France in the 1960s. In fact, he first went to prison in 1963 in Paris for burglary.

As the series comes to an end tonight, the story of Sobhraj’s eventual downfall – brought about largely through the work of Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg, but also the Frenchman’s own audacity – will be revealed, showing how one of the most remarkable cat-and-mouse chases in criminal history was brought to a close.
Some of Sobhraj’s victims joined the hippie trail and never returned home, but many of the characters portrayed in the series managed to make new lives after their involvement in the Frenchman’s web. From Knippenberg to Nadine Gires, Ajay Chowdhury to Dominique Renelleau, most are still alive (or at least, presumed so), and while they now live on opposite sides of the world, they are linked, inextricably, by their encounters with The Serpent.
