Each of Oregon’s 12 prisons offers GED classes. But before the pandemic, only 700 prisoners statewide were enrolled in them, said Donna Lewelling with the Higher Education Coordinating Commission.
Incarcerated students will once again have access to federal financial aid this summer. Oregon lawmakers are considering bills to make it easier for them to access higher education, in advance of that change.
