Shakayla Sams and Donte Farrier, both 19, are charged with the abuse of their 2-year-old and the death of their 5-month-old, Casey Sams.

Donte Farrier and Shakayla Sams face two counts of murder, three counts of felonious assault and three counts of child endangering.

On Dec. 22, police responded to a 911 call for a domestic violence incident. When they arrived they found 5-month-old Casey Sams unresponsive and discovered a 2-year-old child who was severely malnourished with evidence of abuse, Deters said.

There are several other cases pending, which could add to the number of overall child abuse deaths.

Investigators found that the infant and another child were abused by the couple starting in the summer, and concluded that their home was dangerous for kids.

Police have not said if the alleged killers are related to the victim
