After a year without a permanent police chief, Lafayette Police Capt. Judith Estorge appointed to lead the department Friday afternoon.

Retired FBI special agent, Charles DeLaughter, withdrew his consideration for the Lafayette Police Chief position via email.

Four candidates are eligible to be the next Lafayette Police chief after passing the state exam meeting the qualifications for the job application.

All are from Lafayette, and three are current members of the Lafayette Police Department. Of the remaining two, one is a retired state trooper and the other is a retired FBI agent.

Five people have applied to be the next Lafayette Police Department Chief, a position left open when the previous chief was suddenly fired.

Wayne Smith had served the position in the interim since former Chief Ben Raymond was asked to step down last summer.
