The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has activated the West Coast Rock Lobster contingency plan and issued a situation red alert following the harmful algal bloom that has been developing.

Since last week, at least five tonnes of west coast rock lobster have been reported walking out, owed to a harmful algal bloom developing in the west coast in the Western Cape.

An algae bloom triggering a massive lobster walkout on the West Coast could put an already strained population of West Coast lobster under even more stress.

An estimated five tons of rock lobster walked out of the sea this week following a harmful algal bloom that has been developing on the West Coast of the Western Cape. Also known as a red tide, it is the latest in increasing incidence of the devastating phenomenon.

This project is different from other abalone farms because it is partly community-owned and employs about 50 workers from the area.

The Doring Bay Abalone Farm started in 2013 and is partly community-owned. The farm started with just eight employees. Now it employs over 50 community members, and produces 60 tonnes of abalone each year.
