On This Day: Juan Manuel Marquez defeats the great Marco Antonio Barrera
7 Min Read
Juan Manuel Marquez put his name back on the map after Indonesian nightmare, wrote Claude Abrams from ringside in 2007
GOOD things come to those who wait and Lord knows Juan Manuel Marquez has been waiting to announce himself to the world.
He had, of course, held Manny Pacquiao to a draw in 2004, but then lost on points two years later in Indonesia to WBA featherweight champion Chris John.
However, his unanimous and deserved 12-round points win over Marco Antonio Barrera before 8,127 fans at the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Hotel on March 17, 2007 made up for those disappointments.

and, frankly, it s up to us to help them. and here s how we ll do it. and here s how we ll do it my plan this year calls for a $17 million investment in reading reforms. teachers will assess children early on, kindergarten, first grade, second grade. and those students who are struggling will get immediate help in these early years. more tutoring, more individual attention. we ll put more reading coaches in elementary schools, and while we re on the subject of reading, let me say that helping our children learn is a responsibility that we all share. as governor, i ve read books to kids in over a dozen classrooms this past year, and truth be told, as much as i love hanging out with all of you guys, reading to these kids has been my favorite thing to do as governor. i ve gotten really good at sitting crisscross applesa the floor with little ones. teachers need parents and family and family members and friends, all of us, to be engaged. we must all accept the responsibility. t
