Dower College News Today

Papenkuil Primary School in Gelvandale bid farewell to three teachers — who collectively share more than 100 years’ experience — on Wednesday.

At a time when career choices were limited for youth from the northern areas and Kariega, many enrolled at the former Dower Training College to qualify as teachers to foster a foundation for the next generation.

In a community rife with crime and social ills, a teacher managed to make a real difference in the lives of her peers, pupils and their parents in Helenvale by being both mother and mentor.

For nearly four decades they shaped and inspired young minds, and recently Kroneberg Primary School in Bethelsdorp Extension 21 bid farewell to two stalwarts who started teaching back when the school was founded.
