The family of a Newport News man who was shot and killed by police in 2019 have agreed to settle a pending wrongful death claim against two police officers.

A Newport News police sergeant convicted of voluntary manslaughter in a 2019 shooting death was sentenced to 11 years in prison, five of which are suspended.

Henry K. “Hank” Berry III was shot and killed inside his home by a Newport News police officer in 2019. Now that criminal cases against two of the involved officers have been resolved — one ending in acquittal and the other in a conviction — a $15 million wrongful death lawsuit can move forward.
