The Department of Justice has charged former Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary evangelism professor Matthew Queen with falsifying records connected to its investigation of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Survivors of sexual abuse and their advocates in the Southern Baptist Convention, have accused the denomination of betraying victims again after it was recently revealed that lawyers for the denomination along with others for the SBC Executive Committee, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Lifeway Christian Resources filed an amicus brief, opposing legislation that would allow child sex abuse survivors to sue non-perpetrator third parties retroactively.

Members of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee have expressed outrage online after learning that the committee was included in an amicus brief opposing extending liability in sex abuse cases, as no elected committee member had been consulted about the decision before it was made.

SBC leaders did not address, in an Aug. 12th statement, whether the DOJ investigation into the SBC presents a religious liberty threat, though some observers have expressed this concern. While churches are not immune from criminal investigations, constitutional safeguards prevent arbitrary intrusion into the internal affairs of churches and ministries.
