The FCT as a case study has over 10,000 secondary schools and less than 10 technical schools. This is an aberration because students who have the potentials in excelling in technical, vocational and trade centres reluctantly attend secondary schools only to fail in the end. Why do we have so many secondary schools and not a single privately owned technical school in FCT? I pause for an answer.

Another positive from the 2024 UTME is the number of females that applied this year, which is a bit higher than in previous years. According to the JAMB registrar, 982,393 males, representing 49.4 per cent, enrolled for the 2024 UTME, as against 1,007,275 females, which is 50.6 per cent. This is a huge boost for girl-child education in our country. I am glad that parents are beginning to see the importance of educating their girl-child.

Under normal circumstance, not everyone has the aptitude for the mental rigor which learning in higher institutions requires. It is our corrupt system that makes it seems as if everyone had the stuff for higher education. That explains why universities continue to increase in number despite woeful academic performance of applicants. If we choose to, we can get it right.

A primary school in Lagos has been in the eye of the storm since last week. The school is named Charterhouse. It is a private-owned British school newly opened in Lagos and it is said to be its first in Africa. It charges N42m as school fees per annum for each primary school pupil. Before a parent is qualified to pay that huge sum of money, they must first pay a non-refundable registration fee of N2 million only.

Just of a recent there were issues of missing bikes in the school premises. One thing that bothers me is the way thieves operates without fear of being caught in the process. Do they even think about the punishment they will get when caught? What measures are the security personnel taking to tackle this menace?
