Nationally, students suffered deep learning setbacks in reading and math during the pandemic. Last year’s third-graders, who were in kindergarten when the pandemic started, lost more ground in reading than kids in older grades.

They were the kids most disrupted by the pandemic, the ones who were still learning to write their names and tie their shoes when schools shut down in the spring of 2020.

We’ll see if California’s new woke math curriculum improves its standing, or drives us even lower.

That average cost per student is up nearly 6% from last year, Newsday found. Statewide, the average per pupil is $31,950.
