The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark made her maiden flight on December 21, 1964, and was officially introduced into U.S. Air Force service on July 18, 1967.

The F-111 Aardvark was originally conceived in early 1960 to combine the United States' requirement for a fighter-bomber with the United States Navy’s need for an air-superiority fighter.

In addition to being the first low-level supersonic airframe, the F-111 Aardvark was the first sweep-wing platform to enter production.

The F-111 was a pioneering aircraft. Named “Aardvark” because of its long-nose and terrain-following abilities, the F-111 was a supersonic, medium-range, multirole jet. 

Despite its flaws, it served its country honorably.
