Ekaette Obot, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State has expressed concern that the police and Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the State keep inmates in custodial centres without trial and some with no case for years.

Mr Bawa’s case contrasts with that of Mr Effiong, who was jailed for one month by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot, for alleged contempt of court.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, was jailed for alleged contempt of court after he objected to the presence of armed police officers in court.

One lawyer was arrested on a judge’s order for ‘noise-making’ near a courtroom, but was quickly set free.

The press attacks in 2022, so far, are higher than in the previous two years, and are mostly carried out by state actors.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has narrated how an official of the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Ikot Ekpene, Enobong Phillip Eyoren, assaulted and tortured him while in the facility. The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot, sentenced Effiong to one-month in prison on July 27, for alleged contempt of court after the lawyer objected to the presence of two armed police operatives inside the courtroom.
