What are the current food poisoning outbreaks in the U.S.? There are three active foodborne illness outbreak investigations that are ongoing, and one outbreak linked to a type of bottled water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those four outbreaks do not include the active E. coli O145:H28 outbreak on the FDA’s CORE Investigation Outbreak table, which has no food or facility associated with it yet.
Salmonella Hadar Ground Turkey Outbreak
The first current food poisoning outbreak is the Salmonella Hadar outbreak linked to ground turkey that was last updated on April 12, 2021. At least 28 people from 12 states are sick in that outbreak. Two people have been hospitalized because they are so ill.

An ongoing listeria outbreak in fresh, soft cheeses threatens 26 states on the East Coast and the Midwest, with at least four positive cases and one death in Maryland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The source is believed to be a New Jersey-based company called El Abuelito Cheese Inc., which has recalled several varieties of its Mexican-style soft cheeses.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned El Abuelito Cheese about the possibility of a listeria outbreak in a June 2020 letter after inspections revealed food safety violations at the company’s plant.

Last month, we reported on an FDA warning and recall on soft, Hispanic-style cheeses from El Abuelito Cheese. The recall has since been expanded, covering more products and more states.
Why?
These El Abuelito products have been linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria, the germ associated with food poisoning. The outbreak has sickened 11 people across four states. Ten were hospitalized, and one died.
Listeria infection is especially dangerous for people who are pregnant, over age 65, or have a weakened immune system, as they have a higher chance of developing an infection.
