You may have noticed some leaves have already been falling around Minnesota — in some cases weeks before the annual autumn color change. That includes oak leaves, and even branches, that are raining down — and wouldn't you know it, squirrels are to blame.

“It’s just nature happening,” Sagor said. “Nature is crazy.”

A major cause of forest restoration project failures is lack of long-term monitoring. Now, satellites, lidar, drones and in-forest sensor networks are bringing detailed, long-term, real-time data to tree-planting initiatives.
