Alex Villanueva’s combative approach has antagonized many officials and spurred an extraordinary ballot measure that would allow county leaders to oust him.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva has been sued by yet another sheriff's department employee, this time by a secretary who alleges her civil rights were violated when the sheriff blocked a promotion for which she was entitled because she supported a rival candidate in the June primary.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva responded Tuesday to the latest whistleblower case brought against him as well as  Los Angeles County, calling a sheriff's lieutenant's allegation Villanueva quashed an investigation into a police dog's death part of "yet another frivolous lawsuit."

Even though Los Angeles labor officials have called the leak a serious crime, the LAPD has not been asked to investigate.

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s lieutenant alleges he was targeted with a criminal investigation based on fabricated allegations after donating to a candidate running for sheriff against incumbent Alex Villanueva.

The sheriff is one of the most powerful elected officials in L.A. County. Robert Luna, the former Long Beach police chief, is running against incumbent Alex Villanueva.

A former sheriff's sergeant sued Los Angeles County Tuesday, saying she has been unable to return to work after allegedly suffering retaliation for being critical of Sheriff Alex Villanueva and his wife, but also maintaining that county leaders have not done enough to protect her.

Discontent with Sheriff Alex Villanueva has reached a fever pitch, but it would be a rare feat for retired Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna to boot him from office.
