Scores of young people appeared in high spirits as they hit bars and clubs last night to celebrate with friends into the small hours after their A-level results and preparing to head off for university.

Some 20,360 pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland found out today that they were unplaced and therefore eligible for Clearing, based on exam results.
