Inspector sent to trial over claims that he leaked police information

Convicted fraudster Julian Hofstra, read an excerpt of a recording he claimed to have of Daphne Caruana Galizia murder middleman Melvin Theuma to a police officer investigating an alleged leak from the police data system, a court was told on Tuesday. The information was given during testimony by Superintendent James Grech, in the compilation of evidence against Inspector Elton Taliana, who has been suspended from the corps on half-pay since January, for allegedly leaking personal data about Hofstra to lawyer Charles Mercieca, one of Fenech’s defence team. The inspector denies the claims. In February the police denied reports that they had offered immunity from prosecution to the Dutchman, who claims to have evidence on the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.  They denied offering Hofstra some form of legal immunity in return for recordings of Melvin Theuma.

Inspector suspected of leaking to Yorgen Fenech s lawyers protests innocence

A police inspector suspended from the corps for allegedly leaking details about a convicted fraudster to Yorgen Fenech’s defence lawyers protested his innocence when facing criminal charges on Thursday.  Elton Taliana, 41, pleaded not guilty to computer misuse following an episode dating back to January when, police received information that data on the police computer system had been passed on to third parties.  That data concerned convicted fraudster Julian Hofstra who was serving time in a Dutch prison and was entitled to certain “privileges” on account of good conduct behind bars.  An audit check on the police system, spanning from 2018 to January 2021 showed that all searches were accounted for, except one that was linked to the Birkirkara police station, just days before the Dutch inmate allegedly received a visit from Fenech’s lawyers.

Inspector targeted by abusive arrest warrant claims further victimisation

Now, the officer is claiming that his rights were breached by the effects of that warrant which ran counter to the provisions of the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. In a constitutional application filed against the State Advocate and the Police Commissioner, Taliana stated he had committed no crime and that this latest move in his regard was nothing but another act of victimisation, the likes of which he has faced over the past eight years.  For this reason, Taliana is requesting the court to declare that the search and arrest warrant was issued abusively in his regard, breaching his fundamental rights. Consequently, he is requesting all adequate remedies, including damages as well as having his name struck off the “detainee book”.
