As hip hop celebrates its 50th anniversary, Emory University is marking the genre’s success and staying power by hosting a special Nov. 10 campus event with artist Fahamu Pecou and co-sponsoring a Science Gallery Atlanta exhibit.

Debbie Wagner, wife of Emory President Emeritus James W. Wagner, passed away Oct. 7 after a battle with lymphoma. Across the university, she is being remembered for her warmth, leadership and unflagging dedication to Emory.

The university’s calendar is packed with arts events during October, from theater performances to film screenings and more. One highlight will be a concert and masterclass with violinist Yuriy Bekker.

The Carlos Museum and Emory Libraries bring the plight of the ever-growing refugee population to the forefront with a special event on Wednesday, Sept. 27, featuring comedian David Perdue, social curator/activist Munir Meghjani and others.

Begun in 1985, “The Letters of Samuel Beckett” project has achieved a worldwide audience, producing four volumes of selected correspondence. Upcoming events will underscore the project’s continuing life online and in the archives of the Rose Library.

What would it look like for libraries and museums to focus more on community-based knowledge and expertise? Clinton Fluker and Mike Murawski will share their ideas during a June 7 event sponsored by Emory Libraries.

Rose Library curator Clint Fluker will step into a new role June 1, focusing on building partnerships across Emory and Atlanta, connecting with current and historical arts and activist communities, and enhancing cultural and scholarly opportunities.

Just two weeks remain for Emory faculty to complete the COACHE survey. Faculty in the school with the highest participation rate will each receive a $5 gift card to a campus coffee shop.

Need a quick mental break? The Short Story Dispenser on Level 1 of the Woodruff Library will print out one-, three-, or five-minute reads written by an Emory author or one of many writers from around the world.

Various events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including a book talk between Ambassador Andrew Young and AJC reporter Ernie Suggs, the 17th Annual Women’s Empowerment Business Expo and the 8th Annual Love Run 5k with DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston.
