Jack was born Jan. 3, 1940, in Youngstown, a son of Gottlieb and Emma Nickel Ritter. He was a graduate of The Rayen School, Class of 1957. He then attended Youngstown State University, obtaining his B.E. in civil engineering in 1962 and earned his M.E. degree in civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1964.
