Last fiscal year, CFCC received $363,151 in labor market adjustment reserve funds from the General Assembly. CFCC was one of four community colleges out of 58 across the state that didn't account for the use of those funds for a state board report. Records acquired by WHQR show they mainly went to those in upper administration who are categorized as "institutional support" and those who work in student services.

At Thursday night’s Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees meeting, President Jim Morton gave a lengthy presentation on the college’s accomplishments over the last five years since he’s been in charge. Some of these were increasing enrollment numbers, upping state funding through course credits called full-time equivalency (FTE), and building improvements on campus.

At Thursday evening’s Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees meeting, members unanimously approved the state budget worth $59.6 million — and the overall CFCC budget at $111.7 million. The college is receiving $12.6 million from the county and has an institutional budget of $39.4 million.

But that’s not what CFCC’s administration delivered. In spite of that, the survey does highlight some of the issues raised by current and former employees.

Since 2019, several media outlets have reported on allegations of a toxic workplace at Cape Fear Community College and the request by the head of the state's community college system that CFCC conduct a third-party, independent climate survey. After considerable delay, CFCC has done a survey — but it does not appear to be what the head of the college system requested, or what faculty had hoped for.
