The health of California’s salmon population is part of rebuilding a big link in the ecological chain that makes up California’s bountiful nature.

The plan released by Gov. Gavin Newsom lists six priorities and 71 actions to build healthier, stronger salmon populations.

"After these rains," said Ophelia Macdonald, a watershed aid at the Marin Municipal Water District fisheries department, "there's probably going to be a lot of fish by the end of the week."

Creek monitors counted below-average numbers of coho eggs this winter, but the persistent rain prevented surveys for weeks on end.

For the first time after revitalization efforts in Mill Creek, the endangered fish species, coho salmon was seen in the body of water in California.

It’s a likely indication that the removal of the dam is creating healthier conditions and a more suitable habitat for the fish to thrive.
