Since the confirmation of an African swine fever outbreak in George, small-scale farmers in the area have been doing everything in their power to prevent its spread.

Community leaders from the Dameni informal settlement in George say if their cries to the municipality to have taps installed had been heard, the fire that destroyed more than 20 shacks on December 10 could have been avoided.

A year after the Western Cape's first cases of ASF were reported in Cape Town, the disease has spread to eight more municipalities.
