For more than two decades, sockeye runs on Yukon's Alsek River have been historically low, but that began to change last year, and the upward trend could continue this August, according to fisheries officials.

The Yukon Fish and Game Association (YFGA) is hoping to take its concerns about new federal gun legislation to Ottawa, after an encouraging meeting last week with Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino when he was visiting the territory.

The federal government introduced a bill earlier this fall to ban handguns to address gun violence in Canada. In late November, proposed amendments added certain long guns to the bill, and the change is raising concerns for many hunters across the country, including in the Yukon.
