Winooski streets can have 20,000 cars a day driving down them, leaving bikers and walkers a bit uneasy.

The parish that owns St. Stephen Catholic Church wants city permission to demolish the closed church. One Winooski resident said she is gathering signatures to try to block the demolition.

Joe Handy, of the Sisters and Brothers Investment Group, said he didn’t know if the church would be demolished. “We’re going through that right now,” he said.

The citys residential districts are zoned to restrict any housing bigger than a duplex, but this weeks city council decision might change that.
