Stowe Derby Back in 1945, two skiers placed a bet — and the Stowe Derby was born. Austrian ski legend Sepp Ruschp (on alpine skis) and world-famous Norwegian mountaineer and Stowe ski instructor Erling Strom (on Nordic skis) raced from the top of Mount Mansfield to downtown Stowe to see who was faster.
