Growing numbers of UK households are already using satellite broadband, most of them in rural areas, new research has revealed. Satellite broadband can offer a more reliable service for people in locations that are poorly served by traditional connections and are unlikely to have access to full fibre internet. However, despite the appeal of the new type of connection, set-up costs of about £500 deter two thirds of potential consumers from trying the technology, according to data from Uswitch. The office landline will likely become extinct in November 2028, new analysis predicts, with business numbers falling 370,000 in a year to 4.98million, according to the latest Ofcom data.  This is a dip from 2013 when there were more than eight million landlines in the UK s office and workplaces, business communications service Ringover Group revealed. It predicts this will fall below two million in spring 2024 and drop under one million in early 2026. Broadband issues hit 15 million customers over the last year – survey

Nearly 15 million homes suffered a broadband outage lasting three hours or more over the last year, according to new research. The study by comparison service Uswitch.com found that the number of people hit by internet disruption was three times higher than the previous 12 months. A survey of 4,000 people by the firm found that the average home was left offline for more than two days over the course of a year, with 16 million working days lost to outages. It named Edinburgh as the UK’s outage capital, with a reported average downtime of 175.3 hours over the last 12 months, ahead of Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield and Brighton.
