March 1 was my mother’s birthday; she was born in 1918, and passed away in 2003. This last week my 93-year-old stepbrother passed away, the next day the 100-year-old dad of a dear friend, and then the day following, the unofficial mayor of Menemsha, Everett Poole, 91, passed on. I am glad he was able […]

It’s stayed cold enough that our latest snow still coats the grass and crunches underfoot when I walk outside. Ice patches and ruts coat the driveway and paths through the yard. At last, it feels like winter. This week is school vacation week for Island kids. I hope they get good sunny days to play […]

Menemsha stalwart Everett Poole, who served as Chilmark town moderator for 45 years, died peacefully on Monday. He was 91 years old. Poole’s wife Diane confirmed his death and said he was surrounded by family. “He loved this whole Island and everybody here,” she said. “He was able to die at home.” Poole was a […]

Chilmark voters were in a mood to say yes Saturday afternoon, passing every part of a 19 article warrant. Topping the warrant, a $950,000 request for an HVAC at the Chilmark School, handily cleared a requisite ⅔ threshold with only one dissenter. A $16,588.26 ask to cover old bills cleared a ⁹/₁₀ majority requirement with […]
