The Marines killed in the Osprey crash were taking part in a NATO exercise that was not related to Russia's Ukraine invasion.

"The pilots and crew were committed to accomplishing their mission and serving a cause greater than themselves," Maj. Gen. Michael Cederholm said.

In a statement issued Sunday night, a Marine Corps spokesman said the bodies were removed from the crash site and were in the process of being returned to the U.S.
