we do have the first batch of exit poll data from california voters today, and that again, it is just exit poll so a big grain of salt, but what we found there actually looks quite good for governor newsom surviving the recall. an exit polling on his handling of covid in california, 45% said they thought newsom s policies were about right. another 17% on top of that actually said his policies weren t strict enough. only 32% said that newsom s policies were too strict. support was even stronger for mask requirements in schools. 69% of california recall voters saying on the exit polls they support a state requirement for kids to wear masks in schools. only 26% opposed to that. again, these are just exit polls. giant grain of salt. but if this recall is supposedly a referendum on the way governor gavin newsom has dealt with the covid crisis, at least the early exit polling today seemed like a very positive sign for the governor. that did not look like an
state very democratic. what happened in 2020, joe biden 63.5%. what happened in the last race, 61.9%. so overperforming on a percentage basis. you can go county by county and see where the apathy didn t happen, the surge didn t happen. you can pull up the counties where newsom underperformed what he did in 2018 you see one. and that is a very small county. you see where he overperformed, six counties. he overperformed more than underperformed. that s the story why gavin newsom had a victory overnight. we have voter data in here, but i want to pull up some of the exit polling data we had. you heard governor newsom when he was talking in the sound you played really focus on the pandemic. focus on vaccines. in that exit polling you understood why. the most important issue for facing californians, covid. 31% above homelessness, it fighting wild fires and crime.
and when you get a big deal. you feel like a big deal. priceline. every trip is a big deal. in a moment we ll have the latest exit polling on the california recall race but i want to go to the magic wall and john king. how hard, john, would it be for governor newsom to lose tonight? it would simply take a giant revolt among california democrats. what do i mean by that? question one on the ballot. one is keep newsom, recall him. do you want to keep your governor and let him finish his term or recall him. let s go back to the history. 2018 gavin newsom wins the election with 62% of the vote. california is an overwhelmingly blue state. fast forward to 2020 and the presidential election. joe biden wins by an even greater percentage, 63.5% to 34% for donald trump.
