News: NEBE to register jailed members of the opposition Balderas for Candidacy

Addis Abeba, June 3, 2021- The chairwoman of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), Birtukan Mideksa was arraigned at Federal High Court Lideta Branch 1st Election Affairs Bench to explain to the court why the board said it finds it difficult to comply with the decision of Cassation Bench allowing jailed members of the opposition Balderas for True Democracy party to participate in the upcoming general election. Birtukan told the court that the board has started the process of registering the jailed members of the opposition party for candidacy.

Addis Abeba, May 26, 2021- The defendants on Jawar Mohammed’s file told the Federal High Court Lideta Branch, First Constitutional and Anti-terrorism Bench that they will no longer appear in court to follow their hearing. 21 out of the 24 defendants on the file announced that they will join in on the three day long fasting that has been held by the people of Tigray since yesterday. The 21 defendants who appeared in court today expressed opposition to ‘mass killings and injustices in Tigray and across Oromia’ by holding a one minute prayer in honor of the victims.

Addis Abeba, May 20, 2021– Defendants on Jawar Mohammed’s file were arraigned at the Federal High Court Lideta Branch, First Constitutional and Anti-terrorism Bench today to resume the prosecutor’s witness heairng which was has been suspended since April 13, 2021.
During the hearing defendants requested the judges to postpone the hearing by up to two years until after “the elections were held and the government was calmed.”
This comes a day after the Federal Supreme Court, 2nd Appeals Bench closed the file on the prosecutor’s appeal by overturning a decision made by the Federal High Court on the conduct of prosecutor’s witness hearing.
