News: NEBE to register jailed members of the opposition Balderas for Candidacy

Addis Abeba, June 3, 2021- The chairwoman of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), Birtukan Mideksa was arraigned at Federal High Court Lideta Branch 1st Election Affairs Bench to explain to the court why the board said it finds it difficult to comply with the decision of Cassation Bench allowing jailed members of the opposition Balderas for True Democracy party to participate in the upcoming general election. Birtukan told the court that the board has started the process of registering the jailed members of the opposition party for candidacy.

NEW DELHI: Should the Supreme Court split into two: a Constitutional Court at Delhi and Court of Appeal or Federal Court sitting in North, South, East, West and Central India.
Responding to a question in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad referred to three Law Commission reports to assert that all of them reiterated to split the apex court into two to help litigants. “This will reduce the distance travelled and the cost borne by the litigants,” he said.
Although the SC had in a 2010 judgment rejected the idea of splitting the apex court, however, in another writ petition later, the issue was referred to a Constitution bench and the matter is currently sub judice.
Addis Abeba, March 01/2021 – The Federal Supreme Court Cassation Bench has late this afternoon dismissed the appeal by the Federal Attorney General to block the decision by the Federal High Court granting defendants on Jawar Mohammed file access to private medical facility.
On February 19, the Federal Attorney General (AG) has appealed at the Federal Supreme Court requesting the blockage the medical treatment at Landmark Private Hospital on the grounds of public security. The AG wanted the prisoners to be treated at the Federal Armed Forces.
On February 23, the Supreme Court dismisses Attorney General’s appeal to transfer the prisoners on to government hospital, but ruled they can be treated inside Kality prison. However, the defense team appealed against the Supreme Court’s decision at its Cassation Bench requestinf the decision from the Federal High Court to be respected.
