texas senator ted cruz confronted at a restaurant after speaking at the nra convention in houston just days after the shooting. how could this keep happening? why does this keep happening? reporter: as protests around the country calling for change. tonight democratic leaders optimistic that a bipartisan group of senators are taking part in serious negotiations over this holiday weekend on possible gun safety legislation. there are more republicans interested in talking about finding a path forward this time tan i have ever seen since sandy hook. reporter: on the table proposals widely popular among americans including red flag laws, strengthening background checks, safe gun storage and mental health resources. another idea, raising the legal age to buy any gun to 21. something that then governor rick scott, a republican, signed into law after the school shooting in parkland, florida. i think that raising the age of gun purchase to 21 is a no-brainer. reporter: illinois rep
so democratic senator chris murphy, who is spearheading bipartisan talks on new gun violence legislation weighed in. here is what he had to say just yesterday. my hope is that this time is different. i get it. every single time after one of these mass shootings there s talks in washington and they never succeed. but, there are more republicans interested in talking about finding a path forward this time than i have ever seen since sandy hook. while in the end, i may end up being heartbroken, i am at the table in a more significant way right now with republicans and democrats than ever before. certainly many more republicans willing to talk right now than were willing to talk after sandy hook. these are serious negotiations. and we are going to continue to meet through next week to try to find common ground. what we re talking about is not insignificant. inside this room we re talking about red flag laws. we re talking about strengthening and expanding the background check system, if
is contlo versial and now talking about the actual issue of a leak, regardless of the topic, this is unprecedented and we don t know the fallout that could come from this. that is right. within challenge is on rare occasions in the past at supreme court, we have seen leaks of outcomes of races. it is rare and unusual, but has hatched in the past. what is unprecedented about this leak, the idea that a draft opinion would leak ahead of time before the official release by the court. it raises questions about what is motive of the leakers, why would they do this? is goal to put pressure on the justices, majority to get them to change their mind, threaten them? it is disturbing. change the way the justices and staff of the court treat one another and how they circulate opinions and the like could be destructive for the court and the court finding a path forward
